now this'll knock it up a notch (or maybe not)

speaking to industry insiders before i was about to make the (personal) mistake of going to 'uni' revealed that many people in film and television don't like the idea of film studies/media studies degrees.

because... they are of the opinion that the particular person then considers themselves greatly knowledgable in this field.
however it is experience, track record and butt kissing, not extended theory knowledge, that counts in this industry.

and to be honest having read through a few friends syllabus' it isn't all that complicated, certainly not 3 years complicated.

film school itself i have no idea about, but i guess it is more practical than 'uni' and also produces more successful directors.

    depends on your mindset really.

I am getting a bit sick and tired of reading all the goddamn time. Film History by Bordwell and Thompson, maybe you have to study that book as well. It's nonpleasent. Definetely. I'm thinking of applying at Film School again. I want to make movies. Not learn about them.

Film School breaks down as follows:

80 percent prcatical, 20 percent academic.

A purely theory based course will probably get you nowhere.

    WORD.

Hey Skinhead, can't you make the Guerilla's film school topic, and learn us everything you learned in film school? You can be our wise teacher.

it might also be worth learning some accounting, because freelance work means being self-employed.

a wise soundman once told me that to go to filmschool is to take yourself off the market for a few years. very few step into a filmmaking career without first doing the shitty jobs. why go to filmschool only to come out and become a runner? why not just become a runner and learn everything as an industry insider?

of course, a few filmschools are run by industry insiders ...

    Friendly debate:

It sounds like you have had a bad experience with film school.

Who says a film a school grad has to become a runner? A film school grad can do whatever they want. And how is being in film school taking yourself off the market? And what is the market? Perhaps not all filmmakers even wanna be in "the market."
Also, who says film school grads dont do the shitty jobs as well?

I have never been a runner and will never be a runner. I will never ever be someone elses bitch.

And yes, some film schools might make their students their btiches....but not ALL film schools. And you only become someones bitch if you allow them to treat you as such.

    man you sound pissed,

"taking yourself off the market" referred to the amount of time you spend at film school means you can't be commited to a job on a film. because you are at school.

GWE, there is a difference between being "someone's bitch", and being someone's "paid bitch". Surely that is a big step above being an intern.
